Booktalk Thursday- Legend by Marie Lu
Submitted by mer on Thu, 01/05/2012 - 12:51Day is big trouble. He’s the kind of trouble that warrants wanted posters and extensive government searches, yet remains uncaptured because he’s good at hiding and is a hero to the people living in the slums.
June is a prodigy—a promising soldier rising up the ranks.
When Day breaks into a hospital to steal an anti-plague serum everything goes wrong. He narrowly escapes with multiple injuries and leaves behind a dead body—June’s beloved brother. Bent on tracking Day down, June goes undercover into the slums. Instead of meeting a hard-edged criminal, she discovers someone entirely different. Can she forgive her brother’s killer? Or will she turn him in?
This is a great choice for those of you who just can’t get enough of the Hunger Games and are looking for titles to tide you over until the movie is released. This fast action-packed read is set in a futuristic world crumbling underneath a corrupt government. It’s creating quite a buzz among readers.

Booktalk Thursday- The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Submitted by mer on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 16:34Mara Dyer wakes up confused and disoriented in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. She can’t remember why she was in the old, crumbling building that collapsed killing her friends and boyfriend. Not only can she not remember, but she’s been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Suddenly, she’s seeing things, hearing things, experiencing things that aren’t real and it’s very scary.
Mara’s parents decide to move—a huge job opportunity for her father and a fresh start for the family. The stress of attending a new posh boarding school and catching up with assignments triggers hallucinations for Mara. The very first day of class, she faints and gets a bloody nose—not exactly the impression she was hoping to make. Mara is taunted by some of the popular students and finds a friend in Jamie. When gorgeous Noah shows interest in Mara, Jamie warns her by detailing the trail of broken hearts and bad reputations he’s left behind.
Unfortunately (or fortunately…) for Mara, Noah seems to be everywhere. He’s there when Mara steals an abused dog from a crime scene. He’s there when a jealous mean girl exposes Mara’s stolen sketchbook (filled with lovingly detailed drawings of Noah). This irresistible bad boy just won’t give up, despite all of the strange things that are happening.
This is another full-throttle read that swirls suspense and romance with a touch of horror. Fans of the show Lost will love the uncertainty of Mara’s situation and the questions that linger. It’s dark, haunting, intriguing and so so so hard to put down. Author Michelle Hodkin promises a sequel on her blog and it’s going to be hard to wait!
