Booktalk Thursday--Poison by Bridget Zinn
Submitted by mer on Thu, 03/28/2013 - 13:22Kyra almost killed her best friend and she’s going to try again. Something about Princess Arianna is not quite right and even though Kyra loves her, she knows Arianna must die for the good of the kingdom. Somehow, some way Kyra must succeed. But for now, she’s a fugitive on the run. The king’s soldiers (and her ex-boyfiend) are hot on her trail, but fortunately for Kyra her knowledge of potions allows her to evade capture time and time again.
Determined to complete her task, Kyra buys a scenting pig in hopes of finding Arianna quickly. The pig leads her to a swiftly moving river and crossing proves too difficult. Both pig and girl are swept under the rushing waters. Luckily for Kyra, a handsome young fisherman named Fred is on the other side and he rescues them both. Making time for a new friend or love interest is not in Kyra’s plans, though. She still has an assassination to complete and soldiers to watch out for. But between pigs and cute boys, Kyra’s adventure is only just beginning…
Things are not quite what they seem in this adventurous fantasy—get ready for a whirlwind of fun!

Booktalk Thursday--The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda
Submitted by mer on Thu, 03/14/2013 - 13:20Seventeen-year-old Gene has spent his entire life pretending not to be human. In a world overrun by vampires, any display of human (aka “heper”) characteristics—laughter, sweat, body odor—could mean his death since he lives among them and pretends to be one of them. When news of surviving hepers is released, the bloodsuckers are excited. Even more exciting is a planned heper hunt, complete with a special lottery to choose the lucky participants. Anticipation causes the vampire world to nearly shut down there’s so much excitement for the lottery draw.
Gene has a winning number. He’s immediately whisked to a heper research facility where contestants will stay and prepare for the hunt. Without the comforts of home, Gene’s inability to bathe makes it impossible to hide his human odors, nor is water readily available (there sure is a lot of bloody meat, though). Will he even make it to the hunt before being discovered?
This is a great read for Hunger Games fans—it’s a fast read and the stakes (pun intented) are deadly. :)
